The Garden State Wine Growers Association and Edible Jersey are pleased to present this annual New Jersey Winery Guide. Here, you will learn more about NJ’s abundant and growing wine industry, which now features more than 50 wineries open from as far north as Sussex County down to the tip of Cape May.

New Jersey is quickly establishing itself as one of the premier wine regions of the Mid-Atlantic. The state has over 1,800 acres operating as vineyards. New Jersey wines now regularly receive critical acclaim in major wine publications such as Wine Enthusiast and Wine Advocate, as well as being recognized in the most prestigious competitions across the country, consistently winning Best in Class, Double Gold, and Gold medals. Governor Murphy has become the first NJ governor to pour only NJ wines at state events at Drumthwacket, the governor’s mansion in Princeton. And, this fall, the Jersey Vines program promoting NJ wines at retail will see the first major distribution of NJ wines to restaurants, liquor stores, and other retail locations thanks to a new relationship with distributor MHW Ltd.

New Jersey vintners specialize in growing and producing wines from vitis vinifera grape varietals and French hybrids. Leading white varietals are Albariño, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Petit Manseng, and Riesling. Leading reds include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Blaufränkisch. Major French-American hybrids that flourish in New Jersey include Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc, and Vignoles, among others.

During the Covid-19 crisis, our wineries have remained open, providing curbside service and direct shipping. Starting in mid-June, our wineries opened for outdoor service and thousands of visitors soon realized a visit to a winery was a unique, fun, and relatively safe way to socialize. This fall, we encourage you to come out to our vineyards where you can sit amidst the vines, enjoy live music and other entertainment, and admire this year’s grape bounty still hanging on the vines while you drink the best wines our vintners have to off er. For a couple of hours, normalcy will return to your lives.

We encourage you to use this Guide to learn where wineries are produced in the state and plan your visits to NJ wine country. It will be an experience that will become a lifelong adventure!

Discover NJ Wine Country:
WINE TRAILS

The beauty of exploring NJ wine country is exploring our many wine regions. NJ has four American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) which are official wine grape growing regions designated by the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. The four NJ AVAs are: the Central Delaware Valley AVA, which is shared with portions of eastern Pennsylvania; the Outer Coastal Plain, covering nine southern NJ counties; the Warren Hills AVA; and the Cape May Peninsula.

Many of our wineries fall into these AVA regions. Many also belong to regionally organized trails like the Two Bridges Wine Trail, made up of a cluster of wineries in the Gloucester/Salem County and Atlantic/Camden regions; the Vintage North Jersey Trail, comprised of the nine northern wineries; and the Wine & Ale Trail of South Jersey, consisting of local wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the Hammonton region in Atlantic County.

As you travel the state, you can develop your own trail. Tour the wineries located in Hunterdon County, or travel to the seven Cape May wineries, the Shore, and other areas. You’re never more than an hour away from a NJ winery no matter where you live in the state. So get out and enjoy a unique wine experience in NJ wine country.

The Garden State Wine Growers Association is a nonprofit organization of New Jersey—based wineries, vineyards, and allied businesses. Founded in 1987, the association has driven exponential growth through wine education initiatives, cooperative marketing campaigns, and a slate of annual events dedicated to promoting wines across New Jersey, and encouraging enthusiasts to visit our wineries.
