In 2022, homeowners are adding a pop of kitchen color in a new way: cabinetry.

Amy Wax, a Montclair-based internationally recognized color expert, says homeowners are shifting away from stark white kitchens in favor of more color—specifically, they’re bringing bland cabinetry to life.

“I see more use of color in the kitchen … softer colors to give the kitchen a more cozy and inviting feel,” she says.

Sage greens, muted blues, and soft earth tones are taking the stage in painted cabinets, with a more subtle backsplash and countertops becoming the complements.

“[The colors] feel fresh and clean, and they’re versatile and neutral,” she says. “People are seeing kitchens differently than they did before.” She adds that the idea of “completing a mission” has been replaced with a space that invites relaxation and gathering.
