Edible Jersey was recently honored with the 2022 Edible Communities “Best of Edible” award for Best Feature Story. “Heart and Soil,” written by Jill Waldbieser and published in the magazine’s Summer 2021 issue, tells the story of Free Haven Farms, a 1-acre Camden County farm run by Micaiah and Cynthia Hall, who are growing produce, teaching their techniques, and working to end systemic racism and build a new generation of Black farmers.

“The article was an important one for us in that it both told the story of a couple in South Jersey who are doing incredible things for their community with their farm and also pointed to the challenges faced by Black farmers in New Jersey and the U.S.,” says Nancy Painter, editor and publisher of Edible Jersey. The story earned one of just 10 awards given by Edible Communities each year, selected from among hundreds of entries.
