The Garden State Wine Growers Association and Edible Jersey are pleased to once again present this annual New Jersey Winery Guide. With more than 50 wineries currently open and more in development, New Jersey is fast on its way to becoming one of the premier wine regions in the Mid-Atlantic. Here you will learn about the state’s newly designated six wine regions that extend from as far north as Sussex County down to the tip of Cape May.

Our wines are winning accolades in prominent wine competitions across the country, consistently winning Best of Show, Double Gold, and Gold medals in blind taste tests. They also have received acclaim in noted wine publications like Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, and Wine Business, among others.

New Jersey winemakers harvest a wide diversity of grapes that grow across multiple micro-climates and soil conditions. There are currently over 1,800 acres of vineyards in the state.

Winemakers specialize in growing and producing wine from the Vitis vinifera and Vitis labrusca or French hybrid grape varietals. Leading white varietals are Albariño, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Petit Manseng, and Riesling. Leading red varietals include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Blaufränkish. Major French-American hybrids that flourish in New Jersey include Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc, and Vignoles, among others.

There are four American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in New Jersey. For a region to be approved as an AVA, it must be able to prove its identity as a region that is beneficial to grape growing. The four New Jersey AVAs are: Cape May Peninsula, the Central Delaware Valley AVA (shared with portions of Eastern Pennsylvania), the Outer Coastal Plain AVA covering nine southern counties, and the Warren Hills AVA.

As the wine industry expands rapidly, the GSWGA decided earlier this year to make it easier for consumers to navigate where all the wineries are located so they can plan excursions to visit them. Thus, taking into consideration where clusters of wineries are located, the GSWGA identified six wine regions that are easy to locate and follow.

These six wine regions are: Northern region featuring wineries in Warren and Sussex counties; Central region with Hunterdon, Mercer County, and Upper Burlington County wineries; Central Shore region encompassing Monmouth and Ocean counties; Southern region one for Atlantic and Camden County wineries; Southern region two for Salem and Gloucester counties; and Southern region three for Cumberland and Cape May counties.

Since reopening in June 2020, our wineries have become destinations of choice for many new consumers who have discovered the beautiful vineyards, great wines, and entertainment they offer. Come out this fall and explore New Jersey’s wine regions. Experience the grape harvest, enjoy a glass or a flight of some of the award-winning wines being produced here, and make yourself feel at home.

We encourage you to use this Guide to learn where our wineries are in the state and plan your visits to our six wine regions.
