Those warm and cozy Christmas feelings are coming to the Sussex County Fairgrounds as New Jersey’s largest annual Christmas market returns for one weekend only, December 5–7. Traditional German Christmas markets, or Weihnachtsmärkts, are known for their festive atmosphere, with some annual celebrations dating back to the 1400s. They’ve since become synonymous with the holiday season in Europe and a hot spot for American tourists unperturbed by large crowds.
New Jersey’s German Christmas Market, too, has become a local fixture since moving to its new location in 2021. String lights are hung from each vendor booth with care, with bratwurst and pretzels soon to be there.
From horse-drawn wagon rides to pony rides, family-friendly activities are available for purchase throughout the grounds (some of these are cash-only). There are also free activities for the little ones, including story time with Mrs. Claus and her elf. Santa Claus himself might stop by to see who’s been naughty and who’s been nice.
The market will host performances from local groups, culminating in a tree-lighting ceremony on Friday night. Of course, a major draw is the food, with previous markets selling German treats as well as holiday classics like gingerbread and Santa-shaped chocolates. This year will include options from 10 different food trucks.

And in the true holiday spirit, proceeds from the German Christmas Market are donated to Sussex County–based charities—$770,000 in total has been raised since 2003. In 2024, one grant recipient was Birth Haven, a New Jersey shelter for pregnant women.
“Their generosity has directly supported Birth Haven’s mission of providing shelter and resources to young mothers and their babies, helping us continue to meet their essential needs during a critical time in their lives,” says Birth Haven Executive Director Tina Magarino.
“The German Christmas Market’s commitment to philanthropy has made a meaningful impact not only on our organization but across our community,” she continues, “and we are honored to be part of that tradition of giving.”
This holiday event is predominantly outdoors—rain, snow, or shine—so dress accordingly. —Julia Dzurillay
