Cream of the Crop: Hun-Val Dairy Farm

The old saying goes that if you want something done right, do it yourself. First-generation dairy farmer Jared Weeks took that to heart, and after a decade of building Hun-Val Dairy Farm from the ground up, he’s now processing and bottling the farm’s milk on-site in his very own creamery. You can visit Hun-Val’s farmstand for single-source, glass-bottled cream line milk, as well as cheese and ice cream that come straight from the Holstein and Brown Swiss dairy cows that graze the pastures nearby.

Despite a long history of dairy farming in New Jersey, the state is steadily losing dairy farms year after year due to mounting challenges, including consolidation and pricing challenges. The local dairy market has become so small that the infrastructure to support it is disappearing. Undaunted, Weeks has been searching for a sustainable dairy farming model from the beginning, and he’s found it in a community-based approach, slowly and steadily building Hun-Val Farm by selling directly to consumers. Soon, Weeks hopes to expand from the self-service farmstand and take on more wholesale customers, helping to make Hun-Val’s products more widely available. On the horizon is a new retail location and maybe a scoop shop.

“Getting to this point has required a lot of patience and learning, but the positive feedback and satisfaction are tremendously rewarding,” Jared says. “It’s humbling that people are so supportive of what we’re doing.”

Visit the farm’s website for a list of locations to find their milk, butter, cheese, and ice cream.
