A LONG ROAD; A NEW BEGINNING
January 17, 2020, will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of Prohibition. Described by President Herbert Hoover as “a great social and economic experiment,” the ban preventing alcohol from being made, transported, or sold in the United States would remain in effect for 13 years. Its promised benefits of reduced crime, improved health and safety, and a higher public morality never materialized. Instead, it brought New Jersey a dubious notoriety for illegal alcohol and gangster profiteers.
When the 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition in 1933, it also shifted the regulation of alcohol from the federal government to the states. For many producers in NJ, however, it was too late and state legislation came too slowly. Prohibition had nearly extinguished New Jersey’s long tradition of winemaking. Brewery operations struggled to regain their dominance in a consolidating marketplace; distilleries were on the verge of extinction.
But that’s all changing now. Step by step, more favorable legislation has given rise to a new, modern wine, spirits, and brewing industry in New Jersey. Progress has been a result of the passionate pursuit of many advocates.
That passion is paying off. The numbers are growing and with that revival come more jobs and new opportunities. The quality is growing, too. As this issue of Edible Jersey headed to press, Newark’s All Point’s West Distillery was awarded a medal for “Best Whiskey of the Year” at the 2019 international USA Spirits competition.
