Come cultivate your abilities as a beekeeper!

This two-day instructional hands-on program is designed as the next step for apiarists who have knowledge of the industry and have kept a colony for a minimum of (1) one full year - (2) two or (3) years of experience recommended.

The class will combine classroom lecture and bee yard visits throughout each day for hands-on practical application of key course concepts. The goal is to provide you with the necessary strategies to successfully grow and maintain your hives.

Course Topics

  • Mite Control
  • Overwintering
  • Queen Rearing
  • Splits and Nucs
  • Spring/Summer Management
  • Swarm Control

CAUTION: Since you will be working with LIVE bees, please be aware that there is a small risk of bee stings occurring during the program. Always wear light-colored and smooth-textured clothing, as dark-colored, textured and wooly clothing can aggravate the bees. Please refrain from using perfume or hair gel and keep jewelry to a minimum. We strongly encourage attendees to bring a beekeeping veil and/or a hat to cover your hair.

NOTE: Attendees should have a general knowledge of the language and terminology of beekeeping, as well as a basic understanding of the biology of honey bees. Fundamentals of beekeeping will not be covered.

If you are new to beekeeping, we strongly recommend that you take our Bee-ginners Beekeeping class first. The Beyond the Basics course is geared to individuals with multiple-year experience in beekeeping. Beginner courses are offered multiple times per year, so please visit our beekeeping page to see the latest offerings!
